Omaha officers “no choice but to shoot”

Police are defending officers' decision to shoot and kill a man Monday outside an Omaha grocery store.

Omaha Police Chief Alex Hayes says officers had no choice but to shoot 35-year-old Joe Weible because he drove his truck at officers. At least four shots were fired and one struck Weible. The confrontation happened just after 2 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of Baker's Supermarket near 120th Street and West Center Road.

Officers from a fugitive task force were trying to arrest Weible at the time because he was a suspect in a sexual assault. Officials say Weible was shot by 44-year-old Omaha officer Jeffrey Gassaway and an unnamed U.S. Marshal. Both Gassaway and the marshal are on paid leave while the shooting is investigated.
