Omaha Teen Dies When Forklift Falls On Him

A 17-year-old was killed Friday in a forklift accident at his workplace.

Miguel Herrera-Soltero, 17, was driving the forklift out of the building at Progressive Protein, 5102 S. 26th St., about 10:25 p.m. The forklift was on a ramp and tipped over. He fell out and the forklift landed on top of him.

His fellow employees used another forklift to free him. His stepfather, Ricardo Leon, was there and helped in the rescue effort, according to Miguel's sister, Ana Herrera. Miguel was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

On Saturday, Progressive Protein general manager Bill Rhein expressed condolences to the family. He said he thought the employee was 20 years old.

Police say the incident appears to be an accident.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate the death, according to Officer Jacob Bettin, an Omaha police spokesman.

At Miguel's home Saturday in South Omaha, his sister, 15-year-old Ana Herrera, said her brother had worked for about a month at the rendering plant. He was working to support his family, she said.

“He was a great brother,” Herrera said. “I could never be mad at him.”

Miguel also leaves behind his mother and two brothers, age 8 and four months.
