OSHA Says It Found Safety Violations at Martell Feed Mill

MARTELL, Neb. (AP)  A federal safety agency proposes to fine a Martell feed mill more than $56,000 for what the agency says are serious safety violations.

A news release from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration says inspectors found repeat violations at the Midwest Farmers Cooperative operation. OSHA says workers are exposed to fall hazards because of inadequate guardrails on stairwells and other spots. It also says pulleys on augers and horizontal belts lacked guarding and says excessive grain dust is exposing workers to respiratory hazards.

Co-op safety manager Lee Paulsen said Wednesday that there were some hazards at the feed mill when inspectors went through in November and said the hazards have since been eliminated. Paulsen says the co-op will contest other allegations and work with OSHA to resolve the issues.
