The People’s City Mission is filling their entire parking lot with donations for it’s inaugural Shop the Lot event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Friday.

The Mission has been working on the event for the past month, gathering donations ranging from clothing to household items to children’s toys to give to those in need.

They are putting everything out in the parking lot behind their building, located near the intersection of 27th and O Streets.

“What we’re hoping to do is help folks as the seasons change, really be able to store up on things they’re going to have to have to get through the winter,” People’s City Mission’s executive director Pastor Tom Barber says.

All the items displayed are free for those who need it, and Barber says there is no limit to how much each person can take.

He also says five to ten percent of their donations are new items, and most of the rest is gently used.

He says this event is important because of the change of season, especially for kids.

“And children, you can have a child that’s grown another size and you’ve got to go buy them another coat or another sweater. It can be really hard when you have no money.”

The Mission plans on having a successful turnout, and wants to make it a biannual event by also having another drive in April.

“It’s a new thing,” he says. “I think its going to be pretty neat in the community. We’re able to do this out of the generosity of Lincoln. Lincoln is a very generous community.”

Donations can still be made to Shop the Lot. You can drop off anything you wish to donate at the People’s City Mission.
