Pius X wins first HAC volleyball championship

It didn’t take long for Pius X to claim its first HAC volleyball title. The Thunderbolts swept Kearney on Thursday to win the championship in its first season in the conference.

“Especially being a high ranked team, we have a lot of eyes on us,” said senior Grace Gokie. “So it’s awesome to come out with the win.”

Pius X (32-2) has been ranked No. 1 in class A for most of the season, and are currently on a 23-match win streak.

Still, a conference title is just another accomplishment the Bolts can add to an already phenomenal season.

“It means a lot to us, and a lot to them,” coach Katie Wenz said. “They pushed hard. I mean that first set wasn’t necessarily pretty. It’s what the refocus has to be to get into pressure situations the next couple weeks.

“These kids, they work really hard. And for it to be our first year in the HAC, to go against teams we’ve seen a couple times this year, I’m proud of them. It was exciting for them. And one more goal they accomplished from the beginning of the year.”

Pius opens district play next Wednesday against Omaha Bryan.
