At least two police officers are dead and and several are injured after a shooting in the Old Hammond area of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, officials said.

The shooting began at 8:45 a.m. local time, and the conditions on the ground are unclear at this time, according to police.

Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden told ABC News that police were responding to reports of shots fired when someone opened fire on them,

The situation is ongoing, and one suspect is "down," police said.

A local hospital confirmed to ABC News that they are dealing with a multiple casualty event.
