Posted by: KLKN Newsroom

A local family is still without a home after a porch fire damaged a part of it  Saturday evening.

LFR got the call around 7:30 that night.

Witnesses say the fire started on the porch and soon extended to house.

When crews arrived, they attacked the flames from the porch and later searched to make sure it didn’t spread further.

Luckily, the residents weren’t home at the time and there were no injuries.

Fire investigator Ken Hilger estimates there is $50,000 in structural damage and $30,000 in contents.

He says the house isn’t a total loss, but there is heat and smoke throughout it . So,  the residents won’t be able to return home for a while.

The cause is still under investigation.

It was an emotional night for one South Lincoln family as a porch fire engulfed a great portion of their home.

It happened near South 1st and K streets.

Lincoln and fire rescue got the call right before 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses say the fire started on the porch and soon moved to the house.

That’s when they went over to make sure the family was alerted and out.

Luckily, the residents weren’t home at the time.

LFR says they were not too far away and smelled smoke.

That’s when they called 911.

Firefighters fought the fire from the porch, then moved inside. They also search the house for other occupants.

Witnesses say the residents were also able to rescue their two dogs beforehand.

The battalion chief says he isn’t sure if the home is a total loss, but did mention there was quite a bit of smoke damage from the walls to the ceiling.

Crews are on scene for more than hour.

LFR is still investigating the cause and there are no damage estimates at this time.

The Red Cross did  offer to help relocate the family for the night.
