President Bush Signs Ban on Late Term Abortion

It's the country's most far-reaching abortion restriction in three decades, and it's already being challenged here in Nebraska. Less than an hour after President Bush signed a ban on late term abortions on Wednesday, a federal judge here in Lincoln blocked it.

Dr. LeRoy Carhart from Bellevue went to court to challenge the ban. He's one of just six doctors in the country qualified to do what's called a late term abortion. Federal Court Judge Richard Kopf says he has concerns with the law, specifically that there's no exception, should a mother's life be threatened.

Dr. Carhart is the only doctor in Nebraska known to perform abortions after the 16th week of pregnancy. Wednesday's decision by Judge Kopf will allow him to continue late term abortions..
