An inmate who had just been sentenced to up to 22 years in prison escaped today from the Nebraska State Penitentiary. 25-year-old Byron Johnson escaped around 1:15p.m. this afternoon. The state patrol says Johnson escaped while in a Saline County Sheriff's car in the penitentiary parking lot. Johnson was just sentenced on a robbery charge and is considered dangerous. Johnson ran away and got into a waiting car across the street and headed north. Police were searching for a 1988 black Mazda. His mother told Channel 8 in an exclusive interview that Johnson could be suicidal and doesn't know if he's dangerous. Johnson also escaped in Scottsbluff County but little information is know about the escape at this time. If you have any information about Johnson's whereabouts, you are asked to call the State Patrol at 402-471-4545.
