Section of S.17 St. to be shut down beginning Tuesday

By: Kayla Bremer

The section of South 17th St. between South and A Streets is busy with shoppers and residents out running errands.  But starting Tuesday, this stretch will be closed off to through traffic for six weeks.

“I think that's going to be really inconvenient for us for a while,” James West said.

West lives nearby and uses 17th St. everyday to take his kids to school.

“Drive and having to turn around is going to create a lot of congestion in areas on streets that weren't designed to carry the kind of traffic that 17th Street carries.”

17th Street will get new concrete and asphalt as well as new curbs, gutters and pedestrian ramps.

The construction is part of a city–wide arterial street rehab project that includes work on 13 street segments throughout Lincoln.

Access to business and homes along 17th will be restricted at times and has many people who live and work in the area concerned on how it will affect business and everyday travel.

“Driving I guess we're going to have to be a little more cautious in the neighborhood because we'll have to go through the residential area,” Rita Cassels said.

Residents aren't the only ones being affected by the shutdown.  A lively stretch of shops and businesses sit near 17th and Washington.  Business owners we spoke to say they're very worried about business taking a hit.

“Definitely, most definitely it will,” Cassels added.  “I'm sure that there are other people who won't be willing to be so considerate and work with the situation and they may just decide to go to another section of town.”

During the construction project, drivers should use 13th Street as a detour.
