Sen. Nelson Sounds Off On Stimulus

U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska says the $787 billion stimulus package “at the end of the day was the solution that stunk the least.''

Nelson's comment came during a teleconference with reporters Wednesday. Nelson says he understands the public's concern about the stimulus package because of the price tag. But he says that with job losses mounting and the housing market suffering, it was imperative that the government to take action.

The senator also says critics are wrong if they believe bailouts of financial institutions and the auto industry are akin to socialism.

Nelson says that would offend true socialists because socialism entails the nationalization of profitable ventures rather than unprofitable ones.
