Wichita, Kan. – Wichita State used nine straight runs to defeat the Nebraska softball team, 10-4, on Sunday in the final game of the Shocker Invitational.

Nebraska finished 2-2 on the weekend, and the Huskers fell to 8-11 on the season with their second loss of the weekend to Wichita State. Nebraska led 1-0 after two innings, only to see the Shockers score nine straight runs to take a 9-1 lead. Nebraska avoided the run-rule by scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth, but the Huskers could get no closer than five runs.

Junior right-hander Emily Lockman (4-6) suffered the defeat, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 15 hits in a complete-game effort. Wichita State improved to 14-9 on the year behind a winning outing from Jenni Brooks (4-4) and a save from Katie Malone.

Nebraska grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Alicia Armstrong reached on a one-out double and advanced to third on a ground out from classmate Mattie Fowler. Armstrong then scored the game’s first run on a two-out, RBI single down the left field line from freshman Laura Barrow.

Wichita State answered back with five runs in the top of the third to grab a 5-1 lead. A leadoff infield single was followed by an RBI double that tied the game. Then with two outs, Cacy Williams delivered an RBI single through the left side. A walk and another infield single loaded the bases, before Melanie Jaegers cleared the bases with a three-run double.

The Shockers added to their lead with another run in the top of the fourth, when three Husker errors contributed to an unearned run.

Wichita State then brought the run-rule temporarily into effect when Brittany Fortner hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth.

The Huskers removed the run-rule from consideration by answering the three runs in the bottom of the frame. The first two batter were quickly retired, before a single and a walk put runners on first and second. Armstrong then extended the game with a three-run homer that cut the lead to 9-4.

But that was the last offense Nebraska could muster, as Malone retired the final seven Husker hitters. Wichita State tacked on an insurance run when Fortner completed a four-hit game with an RBI double in the top of the seventh.

Armstrong paced Nebraska’s eight-hit attack with a 3-for-3 day. She finished a triple shy of the cycle while driving in three. Barrow produced Nebraska’s other RBI, while senior Steph Pasquale produced a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 effort.

Nebraska finishes the tournament portion of its schedule next weekend, when the Huskers travel to Fullerton, Calif., for four games in two days at the Easton Invitational.
