Soldier farewell Ceremony

There was a heartfelt farewell ceremony in Columbus Wednesday as some of Nebraska's soldiers prepare to leave for Afghanistan.  45 men and women of the Army Reserve's 45th Military Police Detachment will deploy February 19.

23-year-old Mark Grupe is the youngest of the unit and he's not worried.  “It's very reassuring to know that everybody above me has the experience that I don't have and to be able to lean on them whenever questions, comments or concerns arise.”

It's that kind of confidence and comradery Lt. Colonel Kenneth Kildaire says makes the 45th so prepared for their deployment.  He's the oldest and one of the most experienced in the unit, having already served several times in Afghanistan.  “All together, we're able to bring them a good knowledge and background of what to expect and in some cases, put some fears to rest for them.”

Grupe agrees.  “There's so much knowledge and experience that we're surrounded by.  You're guaranteed to pick up on something at least once every day.”
