Some Lincoln Residents Complain of Mysterious Bites

If you've been battling a mysterious bug bite recently, you're not alone. The question is, what is it? And it has health officials are scratching their heads.

Dozens of people have called into the Lincoln/Lancaster County Health Department to report the appearance of the strange bites, bites that are giving their victims days of itching and scratching.

In most cases, people reporting the bites, have recently spent time outdoors near the central part of the city, especially around the Union College area. The bites are usually found on the upper body, and appear as small red welts with a raised pimple center. Many are the size of quarters and usually persist for several days.

The health department and the University of Nebraska are working to try and identify the bug. If you get a bite, you can use Benadryl or Calamine lotion to stop the itch. If you're heading outdoors, try using Deet repellant.
