The roadway of S. 56th Street from Shadow Pines Drive to Old Cheney Road will be closed to through traffic during construction, which is scheduled to begin Monday April 20, weather permitting. Access to businesses will be maintained at all times. Those businesses north of the Beal Slough will have access from Old Cheney Road, and those businesses south of the Beal Slough will have access from Pine Lake Road. The suggested detour route is Old Cheney, 40th Street and Pine Lake Road. One lane of S. 56th in each direction is scheduled to be open by mid-November 2015, and the final completion of the project is scheduled for June 2016.

The project will widen the section of S. 56th to two lanes in each direction with a raised median and turn lanes at major intersections. The project also includes the construction of sidewalks and a bike trail on the west side of 56th Street north of the Beal Slough. The trail will have an under crossing integrated into the new Beal Slough drainage structure and will connect to a future trail planned for east of 56th Street.
