State Fair Bill Signed Into Law

Governor Dave Heineman has signed a bill into law that will move the Nebraska State Fair to Grand Island by 2010.

Heineman says the bill signing creates a significant opportunity for both the Nebraska State Fair and the University of Nebraska.

The Lincoln site that has been home to the State Fair for 107 years will be handed to the university so it can create a so-called research park. Officials envision a mix of public and privateresearch facilities that will bring high-tech jobs to the state.

The university will pay about half the $42 million cost of moving the fair. Grand Island will contribute $8.5 million, the State Fair Board $7 million, and the state $5 million.
