State Prison Inmate Escapes from Authorities in Tecumseh

A state prison inmate is on the loose. Officials say he escaped from custody while at a hospital in Tecumseh Tuesday morning. Police say 54-year-old Michael McGuire apparently overpowered two state department of corrections officers who were transporting him. They were handcuffed to a tree along the highway outside the Tecumseh hospital. They were not hurt. Officials say there was a weapon waiting for McGuire at the hospital.

McGuire is armed with a handgun and considered dangerous. He was serving a prison sentence of between 71 and 193 years on charges from Douglas and Lancaster counties for robbery, sexual assault and kidnapping.

He was last seen wearing a khaki shirt and khaki pants, with a brown coat. Tuesday afternoon, the van that he was in was found in central Omaha.
