Hall County Jail in Grand Island has started housing state prisoners to help relieve overcrowding.
According to reports, a contract between the state and local corrections agencies was OK’d Tuesday. As of May 31, the state system was at 158 percent of capacity.
Lawmakers passed legislation this spring that included authorization to house some of the overflow in county jails.
The state will pay $88 a day for each inmate and cover medical costs. According to Hall County Jail officials, the state committed to place up to 100 state prisoners there.
