State Settles With U.S. Justice Department Over Abuse Allegations

Nebraska has agreed to a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice to address allegations of abuse and neglect at the Beatrice State Developmental Center.

The state Department of Health and Human Services agreed to several measures to improve service at the center.  In return, federal officials agreed not to prosecute the state or assess financial penalties.

A Justice Department investigation uncovered about 200 cases of alleged neglect and abuse at the hospital from late 2006 to late 2007. More than half of those have been substantiated.

The hospital is home to 267 developmentally disabled patients, most of whom are mentally retarded.
