Driving to and from work is probably just a part of your daily routine.

But are you doing everything you can to keep yourself safe?

This week of October 1-5 is National Drive Safely Work Week.

The Nebraska Safety Council is partnering with local employers to make sure employees are doing everything they can to be safe on their commute to and from work.

"The number one cause of fatality in the workplace are traffic crashes," said Mark Segerstrom, Road Safety Project Coordinator for the Nebraska Safety Council.

In fact, Nebraska employers spend an average $311 million a year on traffic crashes, and of the 5,000 workplace fatalities across the country last year, 2,000 were traffic crashes.

Mark says the focus of this campaign is for employers to create a culture of safety procedures, policies and reminders for employees while in the car.

It's this kind of culture that Crete Carrier Corporation strives for every single day.

"Well it may be National Drive Safely Work Week, but at Crete Carrier Corporation, it's drive safe at work week every week," said Christopher Hilkemann, Vice President of Risk Management at Crete Carrier Corporation.

Crete Carrier's trucks are equipped with automated cruise control and braking, as well as cameras installed both inside the cab and on the outside of the truck, which are used to coach drivers when an incident occurs and reward them for safe driving milestones.

Crete Carrier's says ultimately, safe driving begins with the employees they hire.

They look for safe, responsible and competent drivers who not only look out for themselves on the road, but everyone else around them, and follow basic safety rules like buckling up and putting the phone down.

"When they leave home, we want our drivers and we want everybody on the road to come back home," said Hilkemann.

Here's how to set your phone on 'Do Not Disturb' while you're driving:

Settings > Do Not Disturb > Do Not Disturb While Driving > 'Automatically'

When set on 'Automatically', your phone will sense when you're in motion and set to 'Do Not Disturb' mode.  It will send an auto-reply to anyone who calls or texts you, saying you're driving and will reply when you reach your destination.

This setting is only available for iPhone 6 or newer, but there are similar apps in the app store for Androids or older iPhones.
