UPDATE: The man accused of driving drunk and hitting and killing 14-year-old Trevor Canaday and injuring his father appeared in court Wednesday.

Prosecutors charged Jeffery Eggeling with motor vehicle homicide in the death of Canaday.

He was also charged with leaving the scene of a crash.

According to prosecutors, Eggeling was traveling 69 MPH in 45 MPH zone when he ran a red light, hitting the Canaday's vehicle.

Trevor died of blunt force trauma.

The crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, three hours later, Eggeling's BAC was still over the legal limit at .103.

Eggeling also admitted to fleeing the scene because of prior DUIs.

Eggeling has two DUI convictions.

He is being held on $750,000 bond. 


UPDATE: Authorities have charged a driver with several crimes following the Omaha crash death of a 14-year-old boy.

The Douglas County attorney's office said in a Tuesday news release that Jeffrey Eggeling is charged with vehicular homicide with a prior conviction for driving under the influence, driving under the influence and causing serious injury, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

County court records don't list the name of an attorney who could comment for Eggeling, who remains in jail.

Police say Eggeling ran a red light at a west Omaha intersection on Saturday and collided with a vehicle driven by Clifford Canaday, who was accompanied by his son, Trevor.

Police say Eggeling fled but was later found by officers.     

Authorities say Trevor Canaday died from his crash injuries.

His father was hospitalized.

UPDATE: A famous is actress is mourning the death of her cousin, a Millard South student who was killed in a crash after being hit by a suspected drunk driver in Omaha on Saturday. 

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland took to twitter, blasting Jeffrey Eggeling, who was arrest on suspicion of DUI and fleeing from the scene of the crash. 

Hyland's tweet said in part: "JEFFERY EGGERLING had two prior DUI’s and tried to RUN from the scene of the crime after hitting my Uncle’s car SO fast that my 14 yr old cousin, who was wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. JEFFERY EGGERLING is a murderer. May he rot..."

A Millard South High School student was killed and his father was seriously injured in a crash after being hit by a suspected drunk driver Saturday evening.

Clifford Canaday and his son, 14-year-old Trevor Canaday, were rushed to the hospital with head injuries after a crash around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to a GoFundMe set up by the family, Trevor and his father were headed to a show choir event when they were hit by a suspected drunk driver near 144th and Harrison.

Police arrested a man involved in the collision, 36-year-old Jeffrey Eggeling, for suspicion of driving under the influence and fleeing from the scene of the crash.

Investigators say Eggeling was driving a Ford Escape when he ran a red light and hit into the Nissan Maxima driven by Clifford Canaday.

Canady was turning east onto Harrison from southbound 144th street at the time of the collision.


According to court records, Eggeling has been convicted of driving while intoxicated two previous times.

The force of the collision ejected Trevor Canady from the car.

He later died from his injuries.

Clifford Canady is currently in stable condition.

Trevor was a freshman at Millard South High School. A GoFundMe page has now raised more than $36,000 for the family.
