A local family got to open some holiday presents and enjoy the day, despite some recent hardships.

Fourteen–year–old Perla Torres-Robles has Ewing's sarcoma, a cancerous tumor near her lungs.

She's gone through chemo and radiation and will be having surgery Wednesday.

On Friday, she and her family were presented with a table full of gifts as part of the annual magic moments program.

Perla and her family were nominated by family friend Jessica Miller.

"Right now, their worry is the health of Perla," Miller said.  "So the last of the worries was to have presents for the family.  I don't think they have the means."

Perla said her family's grateful.

"They're happy when they open presents because it just gets your mind off of other things," she said.  "It feels good when other people help you when you're in a bad situation."

Some of the gifts included toys, clothes, a sewing machine and a foot massager.
