A highly-traveled bridge in Beatrice closed Friday morning.

"The flood waters are rising slightly faster than expected and because of that we will be closing West Court (Bridge)," Beatrice Chief Lang wrote in a post on the department's Facebook page.

The city's emergency director said water in the Big Blue River near the bridge, which is on Highway 136 on the city's west side, crested at around 30 feet Thursday.

Police say an alternate route South to Locust Street is open.

The bridge closed at 8 a.m., with no time given as to when it may be reopened.

City officials said it's possible it could remain closed throughout the weekend, but they are awaiting reports from hydrologists before they can make a final determination.

Beatrice Public Schools were also closed, according to the district's Facebook page.
