National autocross competition comes to Lincoln for Memorial Day Weekend
A national autocross competition is being held in Lincoln this weekend.
Drivers from all over the country traveled to Nebraska's capital city on Memorial Day weekend to compete in the Tire Rack Spring Nationals Championship Tour.
It's being held at the Lincoln Airpark from Saturday until Monday.
Hundreds of autocross participants came out from all corners of the country to compete.
"I came out because the best of the best is here this weekend. People coming all the way from New York, from Florida, southern California, and my neck of the woods, Washington state in Seattle. This is one of the best sites to autocross in the country," said Kevin Dietz, one of the race car competitors.t
Autocross is a timed competition in which drivers navigate one at a time through a defined course.
It emphasizes safe competition.
"The sport consists of three timed runs on a closed course with pylons denoting the gates, so it's never wheel to wheel, there's no chance of trading paint with someone else, so very safe," said Dietz.
"You are timed to the one thousandth of a second so .001 could separate the winner from the loser," said Dietz.
The Sports Car Club of America helps to promote this event and many others throughout the year.
Event officials say it's a growing sport, and Lincoln is a favorite destination to come too.
"We all started this because we like cars. We keep doing it because of the people. We do this all over america and this is the best place in the country," said Clancy Schmidt with the Sports Car Club of America.
"We love coming to Lincoln. The hospitality here is great. The local businesses have signs, welcome race fans, and we love coming here. I think the draw of everyone coming here and the competition level is why I make the trip," said Dietz.
The event continues Sunday and Monday at the Lincoln Airpark.
It's free and all are welcomed to come out and enjoy some racing!
