Lincoln attorney arrested on suspicion of stealing settlement money from clients
Authorities arrested a Lincoln attorney for theft by deception, alleging he stole thousands of in settlement money intended for his clients.
After getting tips from citizens, Lincoln Police investigators began investigating whether the attorney, identified by police as Craig A. Hoffman, 43, had been withholding payments to clients form insurance companies following settlements. Police said these payments were either part of a lawsuit settlement or to be used to pay medical bills.
The investigation revealed that Hoffman had received a payment from Progressive Insurance in 2017 in the amount of $15,644.59, but never used this money to pay United Health Care, as agreed upon, and instead kept the total amount, police said.
In a second case the same year, police said Hoffman received a check from Geico and did not distribute the settlement money to his client - a loss for the victim of $11,880.04.
In total, police say the loss for Hoffman's alleged victims is $27,524.63.
Police arrested Hoffman Friday for two counts of felony theft by deception.
Authorities say they believe there may be other victims. Anyone with information regarding this case should contact LPD Investigator Scott Jarecke at 402-441-7129.
