Two staff members were hurt at the Lincoln Correctional Center on Wednesday, after two separate assaults.

Officials say both of the attacks resulted in serious injuries.

The first assault happened just after 1 p.m., an inmate approached the staff member from behind and punched him in the face.

The staff member was able to secure the inmate and was helped by other staff members in returning the inmate to his cell.

The injured worker had a chipped tooth and sustained a mild concussion.

The second incident happened around 6:30 p.m., the inmate verbally threatened a staff member and then struck her on the side of the face with the palm of his hand.

As he approached again, she used pepper spray.

More staff members helped to restrain the inmate.

The worker sustained a concussion.

Both assaults are being investigated with findings provided to the county attorney for determine if there will be any criminal prosecution.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services disciplinary process will be used with sanctions, such as loss of good time, applied to each case accordingly.
