The Nebraska soccer team (0-1) opened its regular season with a 4-0 loss to Kansas at Rock Chalk Park on Thursday night.

The Jayhawks’ Katie McClure recorded a hat trick to lead an offense that outshot the Huskers by a 15-13 margin. McClure set the tone early with a goal in the third minute before adding scores in the 25th and 78th minutes. She added an assist on Bri Amos’ goal in the ninth minute.

Nebraska managed three shots on goal during the match. Sophomore Olivia Brown led the way with two shots on goal, while senior Meg Brandt added one. The Huskers had 22 players see action on the field on Thursday night, including several freshmen making their collegiate debuts.

Senior goalkeeper Aubrei Corder played the first 72 minutes, and earned two saves before freshman Makinzie Short came on for the final 18 minutes. Corder, who made her 63rd career start, is 11 saves from becoming the fourth Husker to reach the 200-save milestone.

Nebraska’s six-game winning streak in season openers was snapped with the loss to Kansas. Following Thursday night’s result, NU owns an 18-4-2 lead in the all-time series between the former conference foes. NU had won each of the last six meetings with the Jayhawks before Thursday’s loss. The Jayhawks, who are receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season.

The Huskers return to action next weekend when they host Clemson (Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:05 p.m.) and Baylor (Sunday, Sept. 1 at 7:05 p.m.) at Hibner Stadium. Fans can purchase tickets by visiting Huskers.com/tickets or by calling 1-800-8-BIG RED.
