A California man is behind bars after authorities seized nearly 70 pounds of marijuana that was hidden inside gift-wrapped boxes during a traffic stop on Interstate 80.

The Nebraska State Patrol said a trooper stopped the vehicle Thursday for following too closely near mile marker 296 outside Wood River.

The trooper found a meth pipe and a gram of meth on the driver, the patrol said. A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up 68 pounds of marijuana hidden in several large, gift-wrapped boxes. The driver said the boxes were gifts for a new baby, according to the patrol.

The driver, Joseph Hullinger, 56, of Santa Rosa, California, was arrested for possession of marijuana – more than one pound, possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, and no drug tax stamp. He was lodged in Hall County Jail.
