The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office says a Seward man was killed in a crash Monday afternoon, in northwest Lincoln.

It happened around 3 p.m.

LSO says 87-year-old Richard Gardner of Seward was driving his BMW, when he ran a red light, near NW 40th and Highway 34, and hit a box truck.

Authorities say Gardner's son was driving in the vehicle behind him at the time of the accident, and that a person on the scene attempted resuscitation efforts on Gardner, but was unable to revive him.

The driver of the truck reported no injuries.

The Lincoln Police Department and Nebraska State Patrol assisted at the scene and the incident remains under investigation by the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office.

An autopsy on Gardner has been scheduled for Tuesday to determine if the accident was caused by a medical episode.
