Crete officials organize 5th annual 'Operation Under the Tree'
A special cause is making sure families in need have presents under the Christmas tree. So far, Saline County officials have provided over 520 gifts to families.
"This year is the biggest it's ever been and we are really hopeful that the community continues to pull together and help us get as many toys as possible," Senior Patrol Officer in Crete, Audrey Arbuckle said.
The Crete Police Department, the Saline County Sheriff's Office and all of the local volunteer fire departments in every Saline County town are apart of what's called, 'Operation Under the Tree.'
They found a need in the community for kids and their families looking for Christmas presents.
"This program here, every kid getting a present is a great cause, every kid should smile on Christmas morning I think," Fire Chief in Crete, Todd Alan said.
Officials at the Walmart in Crete are collecting monetary donations all weekend, the last day is Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. You can also help out by providing a gift under the giving tree.
"Every family enrolled in this is a free and reduced lunch family or they are on our backpack program so we know for a fact that we are helping them and their families provide for children for Christmas so they can get something under the tree every year," Arbuckle said.
The gifts donated will eventually be put on display and the families will be given the opportunity to come and pick out the items themselves.
Arbuckle hopes the family or child in need is able to get exactly what they asked for this Christmas.
"I just want to say thank you to the community that comes and helps us out because without them we wouldn't be able to do this," Arbuckle said.
