Teacher accused of assault steps down

A Doniphan-Trumbull teacher and coach who's been charged with assaulting students quit his job before his school board could decide whether he ought to be fired.

At a board meeting Thursday evening, 26-year-old Dale Kavan read a brief statement that announced his resignation. The board was scheduled to discuss his future employment. Kavan was arrested last month and has been charged with felony strangulation and two counts of misdemeanor assault for incidents involving students.

Court records say the strangulation count stems from an incident on Oct. 1, 2008. The two assault counts involve an incident on April 9. Kavan has no publicly listed phone number. No one answered a call Friday to the phone listed for Kavan's attorney.
