Teens caught with drugs would keep licenses

Nebraska lawmakers have snubbed an attempt to yank driver's licenses from teens caught with illegal drugs. State Sen. Russ Karpisek failed to persuade lawmakers to attach that penalty onto another bill that got second-round approval on Wednesday.

It would give judges the option of suspending the driver's licenses of people 18 and under when they were convicted of minor-in-possession of alcohol.

Karpisek argued that it didn't make sense that teens with illegal drugs would receive a lesser penalty than those caught with alcohol.

But other lawmakers agreed that his proposal was too different from the minor-in-possession bill to be tacked onto it as an amendment.
