The State Is Waging War On Domestic Abuse

Last year, there were more than 7,000 cases of domestic abuse. Those cases contributed to over half of all child deaths in Nebraska. Now the state is fighting it with over 2.5 million dollars. Governor mike johanns announced on Wednesday that October is domestic violence awareness month. There are options for victims of abuse to turn to, including the friendship home and the Vine system.  The vine system was introduced five years ago. It's a phone service that calls registered users, and lets them know when an inmate is released or escapes. More than 7-thousand people have signed up for the service. An extra 2.5 million dollars will go towards domestic abuse.  Developers of the program say that phone calls go out within 15 minutes of an inmate leaving and continue every two hours for a day until the correct password is entered in Lincoln.
