Three Wesleyan basketball players earn preseason All-American honors

No. 1 ranked Nebraska Wesleyan had three players listed as preseason All-Americans when released their 2018-19 NCAA III All-American list on Wednesday (Oct. 24).

Senior forward was named a 2nd-Team preseason All-American with senior forward Cooper Cook and junior guard Nate Schimonitz selected as 3rd-Team preseason All-Americans.

A total of just 25 players were named preseason All-Americans with four teams and five honorable mention selections.

Garver (Lincoln, Neb.) was an honorable mention All-American last season. He was the Iowa Conference Co-MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, earning 2nd-Team All-West Region honors. Last season he averaged 14.2 points per game, led the team with 153 assists and set a school record with 79 steals.

Cook (Overland Park, Kan.) is a 3rd-team preseason All-American for a second straight season. Cook was a 1st-Team All-Conference selection in 2018 after earning IIAC MVP honors in 2017. He averaged 16.8 points per game as a junior, leading the team with 83 made 3-pointers and was the Final Four MVP.

Schimonitz (Omaha, Neb.) has earned 1st-Team All-Conference recognition in each of his first two seasons. Last year he was a All-West Region 3rd-Team selection. Schimonitz averaged a team-high 17.0 points per game with 119 assists in 2018.

Nebraska Wesleyan, ranked No. 1 in the Preseason Top 25, tips off their 2018-19 season on November 2 with an exhibition game at Doane University. The regular season opener is scheduled for Nov. 8 when the Prairie Wolves host Grinnell College, a team that averaged 111 points a game last year.
