Traffic Deaths Mount from Weekend Snow Storm
The weekend snow storm made a mess out of Nebraska roads, particularly those in the central and western part of the state. At least 5 fatalities are being blamed on the conditions. Among those killed Sunday was a Lincoln mother, her son and her friend. The three were killed on I-80 near Waco when their car collided with a semitrailer. The Nebraska State Patrol says 35-year-old Ted Wiese lost control of his car, crossed the median and hit the semi. Also killed were 42-year-old Evette McPherson and her 17-year-old son Tyler Tardy, a senior at Lincoln North Star High School. McPherson served on the board of directors for the Cathouse in Lincoln. The semi driver was not injured.
Twenty-seven year old Filamena Matias died when the van in which she was riding rolled off I-80 east of Kearney. No hometown for Matias is known. Officials say she was an undocumented immigrant. Six other people in the van suffered minor injuries.
Also killed Sunday was 7-year-old Cindy Martinez of Lexington. She died when the vehicle in which she was riding went out of control and hit a car on U.S. Highway 30 near Odessa.
