LINCOLN, Neb. Motorists are being advised on what exits they should take and which ones they should avoid during game day traffic.

Game day Saturday’s in Lincoln is one of the busiest travel days for Nebraska drivers. The Nebraska Department of Roads and state patrol works hard to make traffic flow smoothly. Once again this year the I–80 eastbound on–ramp at exit 409 in Waverly and the northbound Superior street on–ramp to I–180 will be closed during home games.

"We block one lane off on the interstate out there to have it be a free flowing lane. So it lets that traffic get out off of 180 into 80 a lot faster." Said Roger Kalkwarf, Districts Operations Manger, NDOR

The 409 Waverly exit closure is by request of the state patrol.

"You know there’s been accidents. We’ve seen them, there’s been accidents. So anything we can do to make it safer for the public."

Motorists leaving Lincoln and wanting to travel east on I–80 should use the following interchanges:

Exit 397 on south US–77

Exit 399 at the airport

Exit 401 at the I–80/I–180 interchange

Exit 403 on 27th street

Exit 405 on 56th street

Other options include heading out of Lincoln using US–6 east or US–77 north.

"You can take highway 77 up to Wahoo and 92 east. Which I’m sure isn’t as busy and now so that express way around Wahoo makes it a lot faster." Kalkwarf Said

Kalkwarf advises that drivers should always pay attention and leave a safe distance between cars.

"Everything we do is for the public. You know we’re trying to make it as safe as possible for them to get to the games and after the games, so as long as we pay attention to the signs. We use a lot of message boards." Kalkwarf Said

Don’t forget the fun starts this Saturday against Fresno State. Also, if you need an update on travel conditions you can dial 511.
