Two Huskers named to All-Midwest Region Team

Two Husker softball players were honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Thursday, as junior right-hander Ashley Hagemann and freshman Taylor Edwards were named to the NFCA All-Midwest region team.

Hagemann, a second-team selection, was the first Husker pitcher to earn all-region honors since 2007. Her battery mate Taylor Edwards was a first-team selection. Edwards became just the second Husker catcher to earn all-region honors since the award began in 1995.

Hagemann, who has pitched in 44 of Nebraska's 51 games this season, is 29-11 on the year with a 1.81 ERA. She ranks eighth nationally in wins and 15th in strikeouts (305), while leading the Big 12 Conference in wins, innings pitched (247.1), appearances (44) and starts (35). Hagemann owns eight wins over ranked teams this season and four victories over top-10 foes, including two shutouts. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Hagemann ranks third on the Nebraska season charts in wins and strikeouts and sixth in complete games and innings pitched.

Taylor Edwards has been one of the nation's top freshmen this season. She is batting .358 with 18 home runs and 64 RBIs this season. Edwards ranks eighth nationally in RBIs per game, ninth in home runs and 29th in slugging percentage, while leading all freshmen nationally in home runs, ranking second in RBIs and fifth in slugging percentage and walks. Edwards' 18 home runs are a Nebraska freshman record and mark the second-highest total ever by any Big 12 freshman, while her 64 RBIs are a Big 12 freshman record.

The two all-region honorees and the rest of the 16th-ranked Husker softball team open NCAA Tournament play at the Stanford Regional on Thursday at 5 p.m. (Central) against Fresno State.
