X’s take shortened opener, create 3-Way tie

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Sioux City Explorers (49-44) trounced the Saltdogs (49-44) 11-4 in a rain-shortened game at Lewis and Clark Park Monday night.The X’s victory creates a three-way tie (Gary is also 49-44, and was idle Monday) for first place with seven games to play.After Lincoln assumed a 1-0 lead on a Cesar Valera infield single, Sioux City exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second to bounce Matt Shepherd from the game.Luis Alen went 2-for-3 with his eighth home run in the losing effort. Alen’s homer made it 7-3 in the third, but the X’s responded by tacking on three more in the home-third.Cody Forsythe (11-4) gets the win while Shepherd (3-9) suffers the loss.Game two of the four-game series is Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. with RHP Matt Larkins on the bump. Radio coverage is set to begin at 6:35 p.m. on KFOR FM 103.3/1240 AM.
