Food Program Gets Award

A Lincoln organization is making sure no one goes hungry. “Foodnet” was organized in 1985 and has since gone from feeding 15 families a week to over a thousand.

The special thing about this organization is they give perishable foods away, and not only are they providing food but helping the environment as well. Because of their efforts they will be receiving an environmental award next week from the health department. The numbers are called and one by one, people file through the line at Trinity United Methodist Church every week.

They're here to get food, but not just canned food, Fresh and healthy food. Foodnet provides the food free of charge to anyone who needs it.

There are over 25 distribution sites across the city and around 70 different businesses provide the donations each and every week.

The organization says they not only give away perishable food such as fruits and vegtables because they are healthy, but also to keep Lincoln's landfill from overflowing with waste.

According to the landfill they receive an annual average of 790 tons of waste per day from lincoln residents and foodnet distributes around 2 million pounds of food each year. Their moto is “Tummy Fill Not Land Fill.” but the greatest part they say is not helping the environment but helping those who need it most. The organization has around 400 volunteers and will be getting their award on June 5th.
