2,000 birds fill event center despite tough year with avian flu
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lancaster Event Center was filled with caws and honks during the state poultry show. Over 2,000 chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys showed off their feathers this weekend.
This was quite the change from this past spring, where previously no poultry events were allowed in Nebraska due to the bird flu epidemic.
Avion flue, the highly pathogenic virus responsible for the death of millions of birds continues to be at the forefront of poultry associations nationwide.
“Bird flu is always on our mind,” said Cole Meardor, president of the Nebraska State Poultry Association. “Here in Nebraska, we’re following in accordance with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, with what recommendations they have for us.”
The department lifted the ban in May, and event officials put strict regulations in place to prevent the virus from spreading at the state poultry show.
Both birds and handlers were being judged at the event. Meardor says they’re also not looking just for meat or egg production. The composition and color patterns are considered as well.
If you missed the poultry show Saturday, the coops will still be up Sunday.
