Small Business Saturday

Before the parades and lights was another holiday shopping blitz. This one, a little closer to home.
Small business Saturday doesn’t quite have the ring of black Friday or cyber Monday… The idea is new, now in its second year, started by the credit card company American Express.
David Swiercek volunteers at the non–profit store Ten Thousand Villages. He says people are starting to realize the importance of local businesses… David Swiercek says “when the economy is difficult, they take care of the people that they’re already working with so they won’t just pull in a whole bunch of new products because they want to keep the relationships that they have going fruitful.”
Beryl Aschenberg says, “I’m looking for gifts that are meaningful. I find that looking at small businesses helps local economy and you’re looking at gifts that are unique for people that you love. It all ties together to make something work out for everyone involved.”
And if you’re from a town of just 15–hundred people, small businesses are the heart of the community… Karin Price says, “that’s where you go, is to those local businesses. Where you talk and get to know each other and that’s also where you make friends, too, and they support your family.”
