2020 Winter Operations projected to be $1 million over budget

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The harsh winter conditions of 2020 left Lincoln roadways caked in snow and ice.
In fact, last year’s total Winter Operations costs are expected to be $6.5 million, about $1.2 million over their set budget. This estimation takes into account replenishing bring, salt storage, and personnel hours for the rest of the fiscal year.
On average, each winter storm costs the city between $300,000 and $460,000. However, one severe winter storm in 2020 cost about $1 million.
Last winter was also the first year the City hired contractors to help plow residential areas.
“Obviously this last year was a historic winter. And so our test program was really tested, and we do expect to do that one, at least one more year to really see how that plays out hopefully the normal winter, whatever that is for here in Nebraska,” said Director of Transportation and Utilities, Liz Elliott at Monday’s City Council meeting.
