22 previously deported migrants charged in Nebraska with returning to US illegally

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A grand jury in Nebraska has charged 22 previously deported people with reentering the U.S. illegally.

Acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Molsen announced the indictments on Thursday.

Three of the immigrants — Roberto Ortiz-Gomez, Melvin Javier Avila-Erazo and Edwin Jose Melendez-Lopez — had been convicted of aggravated felonies.

If found guilty this time, they could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Two migrants — Luis Rigoberto Medrano-Ramirez and Nelson Reina Lopez — were previously convicted of lower-level felonies.

They could serve 10 years in prison and pay a $250,000 fine if found guilty of the new charges.

The 17 other immigrants face the possibility of two years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
