One of those new cases is in Lancaster County, which is now reporting a total of two illnesses.

“We’re working closely with our state and federal partners on the investigation and continue to monitor the situation closely for additional cases,” Health Director Pat Lopez said. “If people are experiencing E. coli symptoms after eating at McDonald’s, we urge them to contact their health care provider or call the Health Department at 402-441-8053.”

Nebraska now ranks third in the number of infections, behind Colorado and Montana.

Hospitalizations have increased to 22 nationwide.

The outbreak has been traced to the Quarter Pounder, and McDonald’s said the onion on the burger was the contaminated ingredient.

Taylor Farms, which supplied the onions, has issued a recall of yellow onions.
