The National 4-H Sports Invitational is entering its 20th year this week in Grand Island.
Starting Sunday, June 23rd, through Friday, June 28th, the event has been held in Grand Island for 10 out of 20 years, including eight consecutive years, and is they’re now committed to the city through 2023.
The citywide event uses all of the Heartland Public Shooting Park, parts of the Fonner Park facilities and fills up many of the hotels in Grand Island.
This year, the competition has 665 competitors, ages 14 to 18-years old, from 36 states.
They’ll compete in 27 events in nine disciplines including compound archery, recurve archery, air rifle, air pistol, .22. rifle, .22 pistol, muzzleloading and hunting skills.
More than 120 volunteers from Nebraska and other states help organize and conduct the events.
Along with the competitors and volunteers, there are almost 200 coaches, let alone, family members.
Competitors families will often this their summer vacation.
The Grand Island Tourism office says they receive visitor guide request from grandparents planning to come to the competition, sometimes 10 months in advance.
That adds up to more than 2,000 people attending the six-day event, a boom to the economy of Grand Island and state.
The free event is open to the public.
