9 Husker defenders earn Blackshirts before first practice in Ireland

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – One day after arriving in Ireland, nine Husker defenders were given their Blackshirts.

Nebraska held a roughly two-hour long practice right outside of Aviva Stadium, which is where they’ll face Northwestern on Saturday.

Right before practice, nine defensive players were awarded their Blackshirts.

Those players include defensive lineman Colton Feist and Ty Robinson; edge rushers Garrett Nelson and Caleb Tannor; linebackers Luke Reimer and Nick Henrich; and defensive backs Marques Buford Jr., Myles Farmer and Quinton Newsome.

Defensive coordinator Erik Chinander spoke about the tradition at the post-practice press conference.

“They were hanging in their lockers today when they got there,” Chinander said. “Hopefully there will be a few more. The guys that got them, they deserved it, and they’ve earned those Blackshirts.

Both Buford and Feist earned their very first Blackshirts on Wednesday.

Chinander said that Buford spent a good portion of last season in a special teams role.

“I thought Marques could have played last year. I would have felt comfortable putting him in the game,” Chinander said. “This year, he’s done everything he’s supposed to do. He’s done everything right. He’s really deserved one.”

Chinander added that Feist, who is a walk-on from Yutan, fought hard to get a Blackshirt.

He kept fighting and kept getting better and kept grinding, and he’s really proved that he belongs,” Chinander said. “He’s proved that he should be out there with the ones right now.”
