UPDATE: Grand Island woman falls to death during apartment fire

UPDATE: The residents who had to leave their homes because of the fire this weekend returned today–all except those who lived on the ninth floor, where the fire originated. The window in that room was blown out from the force of the fire. The other floors were declared structurally sound, however.
We now know the name of the woman who died in an apartment fire in Grand Island. The Hall County Attorney’s office says the woman is 63-year-old Sarah Nyayual Both . She is a refugee from Sudan.
James Curfman, age 56 suffered from severe burns and was transported to St. Elizabeth’s in Lincoln.
Firefighters say they received an automatic alarm just after 1 p.m. on Saturday. The fire was on the ninth floor of the eleven-story high rise apartment building.
They say about 130 people had no place to go. Some were able to stay with family and friends, and the rest were bused to three local hotels.

A woman is dead after a fire in a high-rise apartment complex in Grand Island Saturday.
The Grand Island Fire Department says they responded to Centennial Towers Apartments around 1 p.m.
One woman was hanging out a window on the ninth floor when crews arrived. Before fire crews could put up a ladder, she jumped out and died. Another person was found in a hallway with severe burns. Other residents in the building were able to evacuate.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated. The Nebraska State Fire Marshal is assisting in the investigation.
