Several University of Nebraska-Lincoln students were eager to move into the new Prime Place Apartments located near 10th and Y Saturday.
Many of them say they were excited to be in a premier place right next to campus, but what they walked into on move in day wasn’t what they expected.
"It’s just not what we thought. There’s holes in the walls. None of the drywall is actually finished,” Tenant Dylan DeRoin said.
Residents said there more issues than that.
Dirty tubs, poor plumbing, and broken cabinets were among some of the other concerns.
Some of the units cost as much as 18 hundred dollars a month.
Even though some residents already put money down, they’ve left for a different home.
"With the price of the unit and the quality of work, we were paying way more than what we getting and it wasn’t worth it,” Former Tenant Chase Blackmore said.
While others felt with school starting soon they had no other option, but to stay.
"18–hundred dollars is a lot of money for a college student just to rip out of rent. So, it’s like what i am supposed to do pay like 200 bucks and bounce. I don’t have space to stay other than this,” DeRoin said.
Fire Inspector Ken Hilger said the building meets safety standards, but it needs some work health wise.
He says at this point the occupancy permit still stands, but the health department will inspect the building Monday.
Past and current tenants said this is something no young person should have to ever go through.
"It wasn’t anything any new student or returning student should have ever deal with especially two days before class,” DeRoin said.
We reached out the management.
They have no comment at this time.
