Lincoln’s new Peregrine Falcon chick finally has a name. It was chosen by the public as a part of the “name the chick” contest. The Contest has been going on for one month now, and hundreds of potential ideas were submitted. Friday, the contest results came in, and the name has been revealed.

It’s a name of honor, Orozco, chosen to remember Officer Kerrie Orozco. An Omaha officer killed in the line of duty.

Lincoln Parks and Recreation say the name won by a landslide, claiming over 80 percent of the votes. With more than 507 submissions the name Orozco kept appearing, five different individuals submitted the name.

One of them was Omaha police Sgt. Matt Manhart. He says the bird is symbolic to Officer Orozco.

“To have something that is so proud and majestic and amazing like a falcon named after her and in memory of her is just a solid tribute to who she was,” says Sgt. Manhart

Orozco is the 22nd falcon to hatch at the State Capitol, but he is the only one given a name with such tremendous honor.

Lincoln Parks and Recreation say the falcon will remain around the Capitol for several weeks until it is ready to take its first solo flight.
