Lincoln man running through disabilities

A Lincoln half-marathon runner will be celebrating a unique anniversary on race day.
Lining up to run 13.1 miles (or 26.2) will be powerful for thousands of runners Sunday morning, but 40-year-old Micah Fulmer has a very emotional connection to the day the race falls on this year.
“The date of the marathon will be my seven-year anniversary of the accident that almost took care of my legs and life forever,” Fulmer said.
On May 3, 2008, Fulmer was helping a friend get his vehicle out of a ditch near West A and Southwest 47th streets when he was hit by a car going 55 miles per hour. He says he was thrown 100 feet into the air.
“This part of my skull was out, my brain was halfway and my carotid artery was severed,” Fulmer said.
Plus, bones in both legs shattered. Fulmer spent nine weeks in the ICU and was given a slim chance of survival. On May 3, seven years later, he’s lacing up with something to prove.
“I joined a running group through Red Dirt Running Company of Lincoln, and every Tuesday and Saturday we do runs,” Fulmer said.
After around 100 surgeries, Fulmer says completing the half-marathon will be a milestone of his road to recovery, no matter how long it takes.
“I think it’s gonna be a great goal for me just to finish, even if I finish dead last,” Fulmer said, “for my abilities and disabilities, how far I’ve come, it’s gonna make me feel pretty good.”
